IDAHOBIT Day 2023

As a youth led organisation committed to fostering inclusivity and empowering young minds, we enthusiastically join in celebrating IDAHOBIT Day. This date which is observed annually on May 17th, brings us together to raise awareness, challenge discrimination, and promote acceptance of individuals within the LGBTQ+ community.

The History of IDAHOBIT Day

IDAHOBIT, which stands for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia was first established in 2004. This date was chosen to commemorate the World Health Organisation's decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. Over the years, IDAHOBIT Day has grown into a global movement, bringing attention to the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and advocating for their rights.

Why IDAHOBIT Day Matters for Young People.

IDAHOBIT Day acts as a reminder to provide support to LGBTQ+ youth by fostering a sense of community and acceptance. It also further emphasises the importance of recognising and addressing the intersectional challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. Today we encourage allies and community members alike to listen to the diverse experiences within the LGBTQ+ community. Through this we can promote solidarity and intersectional activism and towards a more inclusive and equitable society, including within the LGBTQ+ community.

Today also serves as a reminder that young people have consistently played a pivotal role in advocating for change. Days like IDAHOBIT offers a platform to amplify their voices.

Names, labels, feelings, thoughts,

Circulate my mind to the point it hurts

It's scary

So difficult being yourself

When people think you're someone else

I guess you can't have good without the bad

But the injustice always makes me mad

I hide behind a mask I wear which rarely comes off
